Iraqi-Turkish scholar visits Jawaharlal Nehru University
A Turkish delegation visited the Centre of Arabic and African Studies (CAAS), JNU, New Delhi on 18th February, 2017. It was comprised of two distinguished members; a renowned Iraqi scholar and translator of Resala-e- Noor, Ahsan Qasim Salihi and the secretary of Istanbul Foundation of Culture and Science, Hakan Gulecer. The Centre of Arabic organized an interactive session on the occasion. Dr. Ubaidur Rahman Tayyeb welcomed the guests saying, “it is a golden opportunity and a moment of pride for all of us that toady we have among us a great scholar of not only Arab world but Turkey as well. He added that Mr. Salihi is a brilliant teacher and a great translator who has done an exceptionally commendable job to introduce Badiuz Zaman Said Nursi to the Arab and Islamic world. Former chairperson of the Centre, Prof. Mujeebur Rahman introduced Ahsan Qasim Salihi to the audience by saying that though he is originally from Iraq but he has been staying in Turkey for last 25 years. He further said that the Arab world owes a lot to him. For the first time he translated Nursi’s thousands of pages into Arabic.
On his part Ahsan Qasim Salihi narrated his own personal experiences while highlighting the significance and relevance of Resala-e- Noor. He said that when a person has a will, Allah helps him in his efforts. In this regard he told his own story regarding the translation of Resala-e- Noor. He told that once he met a group of students who did not know Arabic and were unable to read the holy Quran and Hadith. But they had a strong faith in Allah and a firm belief in Him. He was so surprised that he started thinking about the secrets behind their firm belief. He found that these students were studying Resala-e- Noor. Then he began reading Resala-e- Noor again and again and was greatly influenced by it, so much that whenever anyone visited him, he used to read out Resala-e- Noor to him. Then people asked him repeatedly to translate it into Arabic language. At the beginning he could not gather courage as he was a teacher of biology and did not know the art and technique of translation. But when people insisted upon him for translating them, gathered courage to do it and Allah, the Almighty, created unthinkably favorable condition by His blessings. Two foreign scholars voluntarily took the responsibility of editing the translation and correcting the errors, grammatical or otherwise. At the same time a great woman took the task of writing the translation in her own hand. Many other women joined her work and copies of translation were made available. Later, this Arabic translation of the book was published in many countries and received great appreciation.
Responding to a question as to why a person should study Resala-e- Noor when there are many great books of Tafseer and Hadith available, he said that no one doubts the significance and greatness of these books. At the same time Resala-e- Noor has its own unique qualities and features. The writings of Said Nursi have great impacts on the heart and minds of the people. Said Nursi has presented the things in such a beautiful way as it appeals to the young and educated people.
In response to a question by Dr. Tayyeb about the current position and status of Arabic and Islamic sciences in Turkey, he replied that there was a time when reading the holy Quran, studying Arabic and writing in Arabic script were prohibited in Turkey. Calling for prayers in Arabic was not allowed. And the copies of the holy Quran were not easily accessible to the people. Wearing hijab was banned. But now, by the grace and blessing of Allah, things are changing for the better. People are now reading the holy Quran and learning Arabic language. And now women have got full right to wear hijab. Apart from that, Ahsan Qasim Salihi responded to many more such questions. The Chairperson of the Centre Prof. Rizwanur Rahman thanked the guests, teachers, students and all those who were present on the occasion. Dr. Ubaidur Rahman moderated the programme. A large number of students, research scholars and teachers were present on the occasion.
